Are you following the right sequence in your business?
Knowing WHAT to focus on and WHEN to focus on is a huge advantage for any fitness business owner.
In this video lesson, I’ll help you understand the different stages of business, what it feels like at each stage of business, and what your main focus should be at each stage.
This means you’re able to graduate to the next level faster and with less stress.
Here’s the video below:
I want to talk about sequence and why you need to get the ABC down first before you move onto the XYZ.
Let me tell you a quick story. I was a chubby teenager. I wasn’t obese but I was, you know, 20 or 25 percent body fat. I wasn’t exactly confident with my shirt off and I wanted to get in shape.
And like everybody, I wanted to be in shape yesterday.
I want to quote fast results. At the time, as a 19 or 18-year-old bulletproof dude, I thought I could skip the basics in favour of the advanced stuff.
I was going after the heavy pre workouts that were around 15 years ago right. I was doing these advanced training splits but I was so weak I couldn’t even lift my body weight.
I was skipping the basics in favour of these “hacks”.
Of these “end game things” which someone might benefit from after 10 or 15 years of lifting.
The things I skipped on were worrying about good sleep. I thought, “I can sleep three hours a night. I don’t need sleep.”
I wasn’t concerned with hydration. If someone told me I need to drink more water, I was like, “Everyone knows that. It’s not a secret.”
I wasn’t worried about consistently eating nourishing meals every day. I was skipping that stuff in favor of quick meals and pre workouts and supplements right.
And as you can tell where this story is going, I didn’t get any results.
It wasn’t until I prioritized hydration, sleep, decreasing inflammation, and basically fuelling my body that I finally got some results.
In business, I see the same thing. I see guys trying to advance things that they XYZ their business.
They ask, “Should I do a chat bot marketing?”
“I wanna set up a podcast and a YouTube channel at the same time. How should I go about that?”
But they don’t have the basics down pat.
The basics for any fitness business: know who your niche are, master sales the number one skill in business, master traffic get leads coming to you, and then delegate and outsource so you continue to scale up.
They are the ABCs of business.
I want to talk about the three phases of business so you can firstly figure out which phase you’re in. Then, prioritize and look at what I wanted to do in this phase to move up to the next level.
The three phases I want to talk about is start up, scale up, and level up.
Let’s start with start up.
This has nothing to do with either income or how long you’ve been in business. Typically, start up is when you’re just starting. It might not yet be giving you a full time income.
In this phase, it’s you doing all the work you’re doing all the calling, all the marketing. If you have a facility, you’re cleaning the gym, and you’re training all of the clients.
The problem in this area is people trying to do advanced stuff, the XYZ, before they get the ABC sorted.
What you need to do if you’re in this phase is quickly scale your income up so that it can support you full time.
For most people that’s going to be $1000 a week or maybe $1500 a week to make it like a full time gig.
Your priority in this phase is cash flow.
It’s making sales, keeping clients happy, and then getting more of them.
That’s your number one goal at this stage.
You do not need a fancy website.
You do not need to spend lots of money on extreme things at that end.
Your goal is to get those, if you’re doing high end, is to get your first 10 clients at $100 a week and then start to scale that up.
Then we move into the second phase, which is scale up.
Now at this stage the three priorities you want are systems, get really clear on your niche, and maybe to have some more advanced marketing at this level.
The systems you need to have are systems around training.
What’s your style of delivery and style of training?
So that when you bring team members on, there’s a system they can fall into.
The second thing is to get really clear on your niche.
The reason we do that is so we can craft copy.
We can understand and we know what keeps them up at night so we can use it in our marketing to attract more people, and of course change more lives.
Finally, you need to level up your marketing at this level.
Perhaps you’re building out landing pages and doing some paid advertising.
Perhaps now you’re building out your website.
You have some cash flow behind you. You’re not going to go broke.
Tomorrow you’re earning $6000 to $10,000 per month.
To get out of this phase, we’re going to start to build some systems so we can go into a level up.
Now the priorities level up.
You’re playing out like a business owner level.
We’ve gone from start up – you did all the work, to scale up – maybe a manager of the business – and now to level up where you’re the CEO of your fitness business.
This is the fun phase.
This is when you can start to grow our team and delegate things out.
In this phase, you want the business to run with or without you.
It’s not reliant on you doing the hundreds of tasks per month that have to happen.
One of your main goals is talent management.
That means finding great talent and then managing them and building them up.
And at this stage, some automation starts to occur.
Some automation with your marketing, some automation with the back end tasks.
With technology these days, it’s quite simple to automate things so you’re not doing all of the heavy lifting
This is where it becomes fun.
You become the CEO of your business and you’re probably doing more of the stuff that you love.
Perhaps it’s producing videos, selling, giving seminars, learning from masterminds and mentors – and less of the stuff that you hate.
Like cleaning the floors or washing the toilet, and perhaps calling clients who have a credit card decline or something like that…
The tasks that can be delegated out.
Remember that sequence matters.
Don’t go after the XYZ unless we have the ABC sorted.
