Hi guys! Pete Tansley here. On the line is Eoin, the founder and creator of Empowered Strength.
Pete:
Can you take a second to explain: who do you help and what do you do?
Eoin:
Essentially, I do two things.
Preparation coach, so I help athletes reduce the risk of injuries, get stronger and faster for their sport.
I also help people lose fat and achieve body transformations.
Pete:
Awesome. So we’ve been working together for a while now but when you first spoke to me a year or more ago you weren’t in the best spot.
Can you explain where you were, and what problems you were facing in business?
Eoin:
Back then, I was in a mentorship that you were a part of.
I had watched a lot of your free content and was following a lot of the stuff you sharing.
We had a few conversations about working more together. At that time, I was not in the financial position to really buy and immerse myself into coaching.
I think time was also an issue as well.
I decided to move to Melbourne at the time. It really stands out for me…
I remember handing over my last $10 to Red Rooster. A week later I ended up signing up one client and I used that sale to join Impact Academy.
Pete:
I remember that chat because we had a chat maybe a little bit before that, and you said, “No, I can’t do that. It’s too expensive.”
I didn’t push it.
I remember that chat and the Red Rooster moment. Now you bring it up I remember it well!
Eoin:
Yeah. That was the worst … to spend my last $10.
You were always very honest with me. So, I still just got that feeling that you actually cared for me so I wanted me to become a success.
Pete:
Love that. Such a great story.
What were you selling? What were you offering? How did it look back then?
Eoin:
I was trying to offer too many services, I guess, rather than one main program. I was doing lots of things, but none of them were taking off.
For example, I was trying to grow my online program. But I guess I didn’t put too much time into it.
I bought into the “passive income laptop lifestyle” kind of thing but didn’t really have the fundamentals. So that didn’t work. It wasn’t until I focused and did what you said that I got ahead.
Pete:
It’s a bold move. To spend your last 10 bucks on Red Rooster. What made you think “I’m going to ask for help and pay for somebody’s help”?
When you had next to nothing, why didn’t you say like “Screw it I’m gonna save my every penny.”
Obviously, you had some tough decisions to make. What made you make that decision?
Eoin:
I guess, I accepted that I didn’t know everything. I guess happiness and accountability as well.
Being a part of the program helped my life, a LOT. Impact Academy has such a great community. And you were never too salesy, or too pushy.
Your entire sales approach I liked – you weren’t desperate. You were offering free stuff too which was I guess is different to other coaches out there. It was quite refreshing.
Pete:
For sure, man. So you had one client literally. And you jump into Impact Academy. What were the things that started to change you initially in the first 30 or 40 days?
Eoin:
Momentum. I got momentum. We built it up. I changed how I sell, and I got my first few clients using that method. Those clients achieved some great results.
And then I became more confident with sales. Before I started Impact Academy, I had no structure to my pricing or my sales. So having a better pricing structure helped a lot. The way you teach sales is simple, easy, even fun!
The contract, stuff like that. I never really had any idea about contracts and systems like that before.
Pete:
Did your price increase?
Eoin:
Yes. My prices went up a lot.
Pete:
You’re in a city that’s really competitive, there are lots of PTs there. But with strategy and confidence, it didn’t seem to matter, right?
Eoin:
Absolutely.
Pete:
Sales were one thing. Pricing was another. You started to run it like a business, not a hobby.
Eoin:
Yes, in many ways. Sales. Pricing. My professionalism and uniforms changed. I started running my business properly.
I took myself seriously and I started to look professional. I also focused on building my tribe. On building a community. Which I’d never thought of before.
Pete:
I don’t know if this has been asked, has it been very intentional from you to like inject personality into what you do?
Is that coming out or has it made to a different decision?
Eoin:
I guess I’m not a very serious person. I like to have a laugh.
I like to make people feel better. I like to laugh at things and get them to have fun. That’s missing from fitness right now, I feel.
It’s like two million fit pro’s out there are sharing quotes from the 1700’s. And coaching people like Will Ferrell, it’s funny but quite relevant as well.
I don’t feel myself when I’m taking myself too seriously so I just think being myself is just what I want to be.
Pete:
I think it’s a very attractive personality type to be around as a trainer. And you still get results with clients.
Eoin:
Yes, I’m not a commando style teacher.
People shouldn’t be scared of their coach. Or their PT. But people think about the industry is that PT is a punishment for them.
Pete:
It’s relatable. You’re an actual human being. You’re not some robot eating chicken and broccoli all day.
So… We fixed pricing. We added structure. You learned to sell properly. And you kept your personality. You’re still you.
What’s the result now? Where you’re at now compared to way back then?
Eoin:
Well, I’m earning great money every week. I’m in much better position. Everything is great. I can sell high-end programs. It’s been a massive change.
Pete:
In Impact Academy, our coaching group, we have a thing where we ring the bell when people make a sale.
You’ve been ringing it a lot. Especially over the last few weeks. Can you tell people more about that?
Eoin:
I was up one morning, I got three messages on Facebook, three leads before 9 AM. I sold them all that day.
Pete:
I was doing the Math. Which isn’t my strong point. I was like “Dude, did you just sign 4 thousand dollars worth of new clients?”
Then you said “No. It’s more like $9,000.”
You said, “I’d never made that much in a month, let alone one day.”
But what I love about each message or each update is the quality of the client. You always say how much of a good fit they are to work with you, which I love. You’re working with people that are your kind of people.
You just vibe with them. They’re not as*holes to deal with. They’re just happy people.
Eoin:
Exactly.
Pete:
I think that no amount of money is worth a bad client. If you reflect on the last 12 months, what has been like some of the major lessons that you’ve learned?
Eoin:
First, you don’t always know everything. Find a coach to help you. Find mentors, and then do what they say. Be coachable.
Your program was great. Great structure, the way it’s laid out, and modules, and support… everything. It’s really good. I’m still learning every day from it too.
Pete:
Love that. You’re adding a ton of value right now. You’re sharing some great golden nuggets here. What would you tell others if they were sitting in the same situation as you were 12 months ago?
Eoin:
Get help! You relate well with people. And it will be great for your business.
Just do it. Take the risk, take the chance, what’s the worst that could happen?
Pete:
I think it is risky but I think it’s a risk or do nothing as well. There’s always a risk in doing nothing, which people forget.
Eoin:
Never die wondering.
Pete:
Exactly. Now that your income is like 20X higher than what it was…
Do you still eat Red Rooster? Or is it grass fed, organic chicken, now?
Eoin:
Yea, it’s cavier.
Pete:
Kombucha on top. I love it, bro. What’s next for you?
Eoin:
Now I’m going to add online training, which we’ve spoken about.
I’ve actually had a really good email this morning. They asked me to work as a consultant at the university for their programs as a strength and conditioning coach. That’s exciting.
This time next year, I’d love to have my own facility. I’m now confident I can do that.
Pete:
In the spirit of full transparency, how can we improve the program? How can we make the program better? Is there anything you saw that “Oh, I could have done this better.”
Eoin:
I think some people in the group we could interview. Just like we’re doing now, but for the members. That would be cool once per month.
That would be awesome.
Pete:
Good suggestion. I love that. OK, well you’re probably expecting a sales pitch from me. But there is none – other than this…
